Archaeology often is done to meet regulatory requirements such as Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.  However, archaeology can be a valuable tool when restoring old homes.  The methods selected are based on the overall goals of the project.  There is a range of tools available, from remote sensing and mechanized earth-moving to traditional trowel and brush excavation.  What is appropriate for one project may not be right for the next.
