Cultural Resource studies may be required to comply with local, state, or federal laws and regulations.  Studies are staged according to the goal of the project.
Phase I

The goal of a Phase I Study is to identify sites within a specified geographic area.  This typically coincides with the area to be impacted by a project or a permit area as determined by a regulatory agency.

Phase II

Once sites have been located, they need to be avoided or evaluated for their potential to provide important scientific information about the past.  These studies use the criteria for eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places .

Phase II

For sites that cannot be avoided and have been determined to be eligible for the National Register, Phase III study may be a viable mitigation.  These are scientific endeavors that are designed to learn as much as possible from the site before it is destroyed.
